We help people and their families through a vast range of issues.
One of the families we have been able to help are the McDonough family. The family first approached us in September 2015 to see if we could help them fund a potentially life-changing operation for their young son Max who has Cerebral Palsy Spastic Diplega. Max’s mum worked in HR for an insurance company and was eligible to receive help from us.
This pioneering surgery, called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy), will enable Max to eventually walk. It may take a while, but with lots of follow up physio and practice two years after the operation Max should be able to walk unaided.
Since Max had the surgery he has already made fantastic progress, he can take steps now using a walker and he has better muscle control in his mouth which has meant his speech is progressing well. Perhaps most touching is the range of movement he now has in his arms and hands allowing him to at last give his mum and dad a cuddle which they describe as ‘heaven’.
As a charity we have been able to contribute towards these costs by funding Max’s operation and paying for the flights and accommodation while the family were in America. Max’s dad said:
Words can’t express how grateful we are!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The family worked hard fundraising and continue to do so as Max still needs a lot of additional support. But our funding meant the family could spend more time together, taking some of the pressure and stress off them from trying to hit a very high fundraising target.
The family have a long journey ahead of them but we are proud to have helped them come this far. You can keep up to date with Max’s story via Making Max’s Miracle website.
