3 October 2006 - Insurance Charities Golf Final
2006
Representing the Glasgow Insurance Institute,
the winner of the 2006 competition was Sandy McArthur,
the lowest handicapper in the field, with an excellent
score of 35 stableford points. Played at the historic
Erskine Golf Club, on the south bank of the Clyde,
the event was played off the back tees on a course
playing very long following two days of heavy rain.
Fortunately, the final was graced with glorious
sunshine which was much appreciated by the players,
all of whom had qualified through fund raising
competitions run by local insurance institutes
and Personal Finance Societies, as well as a number
of insurance golf societies and insurers.
Sandy’s score clinched the magnificent Julius
Neave trophy and various other prizes, generously
donated by a number of insurers and advisers, in
addition to an invitation to play in the 2007 final.
Sandy just held off the challenge of another low
handicapper Robin Moran, representing Belfast Institute,
who won the prize for the longest drive. In third
place was Norrie Wilson from The Insurance Society
of Edinburgh. Harvey Thomas, representing BDML
Connect Ltd, won the nearest the pin.
Following a traditional Scottish high tea, the
prizes were presented by Kirsten Watson, a Director
of The Insurance Charities and, herself a former
finalist, supported by Jackie Runeckles, the Charities
Welfare Officer, and Mike Hillier, the event organiser
who is the Charities’ honorary representative
in the Southampton Institute.
Proceeds from this year’s event exceeded £2,000
to benefit The Insurance Charities. The 2007 national
final will take place in the autumn, to coincide
with The UK Insurance and Financial Services Conference.
Details of the competition will be publicised early
in the New Year and will be available on this web
site and through local insurance institutes. In
the meantime, it is hoped that local Institutes,
advisers and companies will use one of their 2007
golf days to raise funds for the industry’s
charity offering, at the same time, their winner
the chance to take part in the 2007 national final.
Thanks are due to all who contributed to the success
of the 2006 competition as contributors, players
and organisers. Special thanks must go to Artemis
Fund Managers and Hartford Life for their generous
donations to the prizes and the players’ goodie
bags.

Insurance Charities Golf Final 2005
The
final of the 2005 Insurance Charities Golf Competition
was held at The Manor of Groves Golf Club on 20
September.
A glorious day saw 15 competitors take to the
fairway to battle it out for the Julius Neave Trophy.
Each finalist had won through from a qualifying
event organised by either an insurance company
or local institute of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Competitors came from as far away as Belfast and
Newcastle. The winner, in a closely fought final,
was Doug Walker from Reading. Doug had qualified
to play on the final as the winner of the competition
organised by The Insurance Institute of Reading.
As well as winning the prestigious trophy, Doug
qualifies to play in the 2006 Final to be played
in Glasgow.
