2011 golf competition final attracts record entry
Played over the East (Championship) course at the East Sussex National Golf Club in fine but windy weather our 2011 final attracted a record entry of 40 players drawn from local institutes, businesses and insurance golf societies, the winner emerged from a group of three players who each finished the day with 39 Stableford points (three better than handicap), with Martin Phillmore, representing the Insurance Institute of Southampton, prevailing by having the better score over the last nine holes.
In second place was Steve Webb, of Reading institute, the winner in 2009, followed by Iain MacInnes, of the Manchester Institute. Martin and Steve both won prize vouchers kindly provided by The Hamper People, as did Ian Walker, of Tunbridge Wells Institute, and Iain Hardiker, representing Nottingham Institute, the winners of the longest drive and nearest the pin competitions, respectively.
Martin and Steve also received engraved memento tankards kindly supplied by Brighton Institute who hosted the event as part of their centenary celebrations. Brighton, also, supplied other items, including a number of their centenary polo shirts and bottles of their centenary ale.
The event was, once again, very generously sponsored by Rainbow International Ltd, the disaster recovery firm, and we were delighted that they were represented during the day and at the presentation meal by Peter David, area director for the South of England, and Wilf Charles and Janice Lockyer, the local franchisees. Brighton Institute were represented by their Centenary President, Alan Jenner, Diana Webley Ward, their Charities Representative, Colin McFarlin, Chair of their centenary committee, and Hugh Robinson. Our thanks to them all for their interest and support.
The prizes, and the magnificent Julian Neave Cup, were presented to the winners by Kirsten Watson, The Charities President, and Janice Lockyer of Rainbow. We were pleased that Graham Cave, The Charities Deputy President was, also, able to attend, together with Annili-Joy Thornicroft, the CEO of The Charities.
With players from as far afield as Aberdeen and Cardiff, many of the finalists had travelled a long way to participate in the final. The event, which everyone has said they enjoyed, and has raised a significant amount for The Charities, was jointly organised by Rachel Mason, The Charities Marketing Manager, and Mike Hillier, The Charities Fund Raiser for Southampton Institute.
