Brenda's story: How we offered support for the wife of a multi-farct sufferer
Brenda’s husband, Geoff, spent all of his working life with Britannic Assurance. Soon after retirement his health started to deteriorate and he was diagnosed with a condition known as multi-farct, whereby a series of mini strokes gradually kill off brain cells over a period of time. As is often the case, only those close to the sufferer recognise the early signs and Brenda found that she was having to spend more and more time with Geoff even though, to the outside world, he seemed to be in reasonable health.
As Geoff’s condition deteriorated it became
clear that Brenda could no longer care for him at
home. A local Home was found which could provide
an appropriate level of care but Brenda spent many
sleepless nights worrying about how the fees could
be met. She had almost resigned herself to the fact
that she would need to sell the couple’s modest
house when she found out about us.
We were able to help with both the shortfall between Geoff’s income and expenditure in the Home as well as supplement Brenda’s meagre income from the state so that she could meet normal day-to-day living expenses. Brenda was therefore able to get on with visiting Geoff on a regular basis, in a Home where he was well cared for, whilst continuing to enjoy a degree of independence by maintaining her property and running her small car.
